The Canton train depot museum

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

The Depot was built in 1890 and in 1926 the north and south buildings were added. The Illinois Central Railroad Company owned and maintained the depot until 1991 when it was purchased by the Canton Redevelopment Authority.

The restoration was completed in June, 1999. The museum reflects the history of Madison County and how the “iron horse” affected social and economic growth and development, particularly the area in and around Canton.

Also, the museum has a few working model trains set up.

R.J. Barrel’s

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

R.J. Barrel is a restaurant/bar on the Canton square frequented by the innkeepers. We always feel welcome and have come to be friends with the owner, Jeff Hammontree and his lovely parents. They serve pizza, burgers, sandwiches, etc. and they have a nice selection of beer. My favorite is the veggie pizza, with the Stromboli coming in as a close second. The atmosphere is casual and charming…brick walls, old wood floors and barrels galore. There is usually live music on Friday and Saturday evenings. On occasion, the innkeepers can be spotted playing some cajun and old time tunes.
Hours are:
Mon – Thurs 11:00 – 2:00
Fri – Sat 11:00 – 2:00 / 5:00 – 9:00The innkeepers playing tunes at RJ Barrel\'s with their band, Tadpole Thibadeaux and the Tidewater FrogLegs.

The Mermaid Cafe

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

About a 15 minute drive west on Peace St. from Heart’s Content Bed and Breakfast in the Lake Caroline community is the Mermaid Cafe on the shores of the lake. We have eaten there a few times and it is great. The food is great, the service is great, and the atmosphere is great (it’s casual).

Appetizers run about $10 and are large enough for a couple to split.
Entrees average around $18 with everything a la carte.
The deserts are wonderful at around $5 each.

This restaurant is another of Nick Apostle’s creations. He also has Nick’s Restaurant in Jackson, MS.

Please tell them Heart’s Content sent you.

Hot Air Balloon Race and Festival in Canton

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

The Mississippi Championship Hot Air Balloon Race and Festival takes place in Canton, Mississippi every year around July 4th. This event has been going strong for 23 years and attracts about 45,000 people. For three days our small town of Canton is visited by dozens of balloons, including Oggy the Dragon and Pandy the Panda Bear. The event includes a fireworks show, a balloon glow, and a launch party with live music and food. There are also skydivers as well. This is a great event for families. The kids love the giant character balloons and the children’s area. Most of the event is located at the multipurpose center except for the launch party which is held on the town square. There is also a balloon glow and fireworks show in Ridgeland at Northpark Mall. Admission is free. For more information visit the website here.
